Teaching:

The Faculty offers three graduate programmes: Regional Studies (covering topics such as International Politics and Social Studies), Christian Theology, and Social work. Additionally, there is one more programme we plan to offer to the students, namely “Power and Culture”. This programme is designed in collaboration with the faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies, thus representing a joint product of the two faculties.
Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences intends to strengthen y the MA in Christian Theology.

The MA Programme in Christian Theology offers students the possibility to study theology on an advanced scientific level; it offers them theoretical, analytical, and critical background and criteria to develop qualification and skills in various theological disciplines; to strengthen their critical thinking via-à-vis the given theological-ethical approaches; to gain skills needed for practical thinking and competences; to explore the role of theology in perceiving reality from the perspective of critically thinking players in this reality; and to research the link between theology, human values and society building.
In order to achieve these goals, we focus on key subjects of theology which are the following: Theology of the New Testament; Theology of the Old Testament; Church History; Dogmatic Theology; History of Theological Thought; Byzantine and Medieval Christian Art; History of Christian Ethics; Theology of Worship; Phenomenology of Religion; Canon Law; Sociology of Religion. There is the number of further subjects which students can choose from.

All these subjects are taught according to the Ecumenical principle that was worked out on the basis of the debates in the framework of NELCEE.

Another key priority is to work on the social concept of churches, taking into account the Georgian reality.
As Ilia Chavchavadze State University implements a policy of liberal education, students are able to choose courses from the subjects offered by all faculties rather than just by one’s own faculty. For example, students of the MA programme Christian Theology can choose MA courses from the Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies such as The Christian Church and the Birth of Europe, Political Theology, Christian Iconography, Aspects of Christian Ideology and Law, etc.
